Baton Rouge - Oktoberfest

Day 4 - Friday

Friday was another long travel day from Callaway Gardens to Baton Rouge, LA.  The seven hour trip took us 10 hours because we discovered the battery doesn't like 90 degree heat and the bikes on the back of the car.  We had three recharging stops rather than the estimated two.  We arrived in time for Gary's famous jambalaya.  He re-seasoned his big jambalaya kettle and made enough for everyone and the neighbors.

After dinner we enjoyed catching up with siblings and nieces before heading to Coffee Call for beignets and cafe au lait, one of our Baton Rouge traditions.  Then we headed home to our AirBnB that we are sharing with Carrie and Craig.

Day 5 - Saturday

After breakfast we headed to the grocery for the items needed for German potato salad and Louisiana delicacies to take home.  Next stop was Tony's Seafood for Gulf shrimp (with the heads on) and then to Anthony's Deli for muffalettas.

Jean, Rachel and Ginny were hard at work when we arrived, preparing the fare for our Oktoberfest meal.  The menu for the day included cabbage rolls (krautwickel), sauerkraut, brats, potato salad, pretzel balls and black forest cake (without the cherries because Rachel doesn't like cherries and she was the baker.

In order to burn a few calories we walked over to the old homestead on South Tinley Drive.  The Carbo family arrived after the LSU game ended and enjoyed playing with MiMi and PiPi's games and toys until dinner.

Carrie & Craig made the potato salad.  Gary grilled the brats and then was the song leader for the Schnitzelbank song.  He dressed the part and did the Kessel Klan proud.  The Oktoberfest feast was enjoyed by al.  We headed back to the AirBnB after saying goodbye to the Carbo's, Rachael and Ginny.

Day 6 - Sunday

We met at St. Alphonsus Church to attend Mass together and then went to Mom & Dad's grave.  Jean had made a beautiful fall flower arrangement and we shared some memories and said a prayer.

For lunch we stopped at Poboy Express for sandwiches and Carrie tried a crawfish pie because she had never had one.  She described it as Crawfish Etoufee in a pie shell.

Greg and Deborah had invited to their house for a swim.  It had been close to 90 degrees all week, but for the weekend it had dropped to a high of 74.  The pool was 78 so Jean and I hopped in do our water exercises.

For supper we had barbecued shrimp, French bread and salad.  Deborah had made dessert - a Bundt cake with vanilla ice cream.

It was great to get together with all the siblings.
